We write and use computer code to understand DNA code!
About our role:
We stare at computer screens all day to stitch together the DNA sequences produced by the Genome Generator team. Then we look for interesting patterns in the DNA that help us understand how only 4 letters A T G C make up all life!

Here’s a picture of one of the computer clusters I worked on in the past. Each shelf in this rack (there are 12 in this one) is a big computer with about 60 processors, 500 Gigabytes of RAM, and about 12 Terabytes of storage.
So this one rack has about ~700 processors, 6000 Gigabytes of RAM, and about 70 Terabytes of disk storage!
For comparison, a typical modern high powered laptop has about 8 processors, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and about 0.5-1 Terabyte of disk storage.
I don’t use all these resources alone. A group of about 20 of us share this resource. But there have definitely been times where I have used up ALL the ram and ALL the processing power with just one command🙈
