Today at 7 pm: Let’s talk about biodiversity!

⏰ The first monthly Chat for all students is on this evening, 7pm to 8pm ⏰ The topic of today’s Chat is: ⭐ Preserving biodiversity through Genomics ⭐ We’ll be joined by Chiara Bortoluzzi who, as a graduate student, analysed the DNA of domesticated bird species to find changes that, in the long-term, could drive these species to extinction. Chiara’s role as a conservation biologist on the Darwin Tree of Life project involves, using DNA as a tool to inform conservation programmes of endangered species! Tuesday 23 November: Let’s talk about biodiversity!

⏰ The first monthly live Chat for all students is soon! Tuesday 23 November at 7pm to 8pm ⏰ The topic of this month’s Chat is: ⭐ Preserving biodiversity through Genomics ⭐ Biodiversity is at the core of the Darwin Tree of Life project. The teams are aiming to obtain genome sequences for each of the 70,000+ species of eukaryotic organisms in Britain and Ireland. This type of genomic information can then help us in the conservation and protection of the species that share our islands. For the first time ever, the Darwin Tree of Life experts have sequenced the complete genomes of the red and grey squirrels. Now, we can use this information to ask important conservation questions like: What is it that makes grays immune to deadly squirrel pox? Is it better to select certain red squirrels for reintroduction into areas where they have become thin on the … Continue reading
