Question: Hi :) I know this project is fairly new; but I wanted to ask what, in your opinion, has been the most interesting thing that you have discovered so far.

  For me, the most interesting thing is learning about all the different species that live in Britain and Ireland. I’ve always been interested in wildlife, but I didn’t realise just how many species there are here!

  I only started working on the project a few weeks ago and I’m already loving how much I’ve learnt about the huge variety of different species of animals, plants, fungi and protists found all across the UK!

  I love the diversity of species that share our island, but for me the most interesting thing so far has been learning how we sequence them, why some organisms are tricky to sequence and how changing the biochemistry of the preparation processes can make a big difference.

  The moments when I really think “this project is awesome” is when I recgonise the name of a species that we are finding the DNA sequence for – for example a butterfly I have heard of, or a plant that is growing in my garden! It really makes the project very real and tangible.
