I went away to university at 18, moving from my parents’ house in Wiltshire to halls of residence in Cardiff. It was a huge change at the time, but I did make friends quite quickly, and then found a great group of women to share a house with for the rest of undergrad. Since then I have mostly lived away from my parents, though I did spend about 8 months at the end of my PhD living with my parents while I was writing up and job hunting!

I travelled quite a lot from the age of 16, but I properly moved all my things out at 19 and moved to Brighton. I’ve just moved back as close to them as I can though, I think if you get on well with your parents you never really want to go away from them! I moved back in with them for a bit over lockdown, and now I’m just down the road and have been trying to persuade them to move in with me eventually! I think I’ll persuade them eventually…

I left my parents when I moved to London for my undergraduate degree in 2009. I remember it being a massive change at the time but I got to meet lots of new people on my degree course and kept myself busy exploring London. I always saw my parents during the holidays and get to see them a bit more now that I’ve moved to Norwich, originally to do my PhD and then stayed to work in science communication (they only live a short drive away from the city).
