  I’ve been working and volunteering in the environmental science area for over 10 years now, but its a big field, I’ve done everything from feeding fish and cleaning out fish tanks to teaching kids about how important forests are. I’m still finding exactly where I fit and where I want to work, there are so many interesting career opportunities. I really get excited about looking at stuff under the microscope and trying to identify it, which luckily is a lot of what I get to do now!

  I’ve been working in science communication and public engagement for about 4 years now. Before that I did an undergraduate degree and PhD in chemistry so I’ve been studying and working in science ever since I left school after my A-levels in 2009. I really love what I do, particularly getting to meet people from local schools and nature groups and showing them how to do simple laboratory experiment for identifying plant, insect and fungi species (a technique called DNA barcoding).

I’ve been working in microbiology off and on for 5 years now. My overall career in science though would be a lot longer (over fifteen years!). My first job involved testing soil, water and oil, plants and seeds at a farm lab and then I moved into microbiology and environmental science for over 10 years before settling here at the Earlham where it is full-time microbiology. I’ve been here 3 years.
